Bosch’s discovery at the Gallagher’s vacation cabin sets him to investigate the happenings at the family business. Meanwhile, Maddie and Reina respond to another robbery that goes awry. And Honey’s campaign takes a direct hit after a debate with D.A. Archer.
We return to the cabin, where Bosch and local Ventura police continue searching for clues. Other than the blanket left behind, there are no new leads. Harry decides to question Steven Gallagher’s business partners, Shelia and Shane. Sheila was Steven’s first hire and records the books. Shane came later as the company was starved for cash. They both know about the embezzlement, alleging at least $1 million was stolen. Bosch’s next step is to question all employees.
He comes across a name left off the list, a young man with prior drug charges, and Shelia’s son. Justin Boatman was fired for stealing petty cash. As he denies being involved in the disappearance, he confirms Bosch’s suspicions that something isn’t quite kosher at Gallagher. After bugging their office, Bosch and Mo learn of a secret deal later that evening. Following Shane, they discover him selling equipment to random hoodlums.
Maddie and Reina follow up on an armed robbery from the night before. Our thieves targeted a couple in a posh neighborhood but barely escaped when the husband was revealed to be an armed officer. Nestor’s girlfriend advised them not to pursue the couple for that reason. Tensions have risen between her and the two musclemen after she split the earnings 50/50.
Meanwhile, Detectives Jimmy Robertson and Perry Lopez are busy piecing together viable evidence to connect Harry to Dockweiler’s murder. They question Preston Borders about the $500/month commissary deposits his wife’s janitorial salary could not afford. Off the record, he details he received a random burner phone from Harry Bosch. He won’t spill more details until a meeting with the D.A. is arranged.
Borders wants to be transferred to a facility closer to his wife in exchange for his information. Robertson and Lopez agree and present the current facts to their boss: they have Preston’s message to Maddie, Bosch’s interrogation footage, the burner calls between the two, and the alignment of Curtis Dignan’s release. Before they make their plans, D.A. Archer pulls one on the fly.
During the radio debate, facing scrutiny about his lack of support, Archer dropped the bomb that Bosch is being investigated for his alleged involvement in an inmate’s death. He connects Honey to Bosch providing security at her fundraising event. With the cat out of the bag, Bosch is officially subpoenaed to confront a grand jury. And Chandler sinks in the polls.
This episode was solid as our various mysteries and cases continue to take shape. Nothing action-packed as this was more detective work and pushing the narrative forward. The performances are serviceable, but no particular standout moments.
