Bosch: Legacy S2 continues the story of Harry Bosch, a former LAPD homicide detective who presently seeks justice on his own terms as a private investigator. Alongside Bosch, the show follows no-nonsense district attorney Honey Chandler, and Maddie, a young police officer who is also Bosch’s daughter. Episode 9 of season 2 explores themes related to perseverance and good vs. evil.
In episode 9, Bosch (Titus Welliver) takes measures to track down Ellis (Max Martini), who is in hiding after escaping from a shootout with Bosch which took place in episode 8. Honey (Mimi Rogers) faces off against the FBI who are trying to build a criminal case against her which threatens to tarnish her reputation and put her defense trial in jeopardy. Maddie (Madison Lintz) worries for her father and takes it upon herself to make sure he’s not in danger of being attacked by Ellis.
Episode 9 is the penultimate episode of the season. This would normally imply that the stakes of the season should continue to rise in order to build excitement for the final episode. Unfortunately, the episode falls short in this regard, as many of the obstacles that Bosch, Chandler, and Maddie face are overcome much too easily. This leaves the viewer feeling somewhat cheated out of an exciting climax for the episode. Despite not having an especially exciting plot as a stand alone episode, “Escape Plan” does still manage to build some anticipation for the season finale by featuring some unexpected story moments that still need to be concluded.
The acting is fairly strong all around in the episode, though Mimi Rogers’s delivery feels a bit stiff in some scenes, which is a problem given how much screen time she’s given in the episode. Titus Welliver stands out with the strongest performance, though that seems to be the most consistent trend of the season. Overall, “Escape Plan” feels like one of the weaker episodes of season 2, mainly because it lacks the excitement and tension that a typical penultimate episode should have.
