Review: ‘Boots’ Season 1, Episode 7 “Love is a Battlefield”

Our second to last episode begins with Sullivan giving a speech at a wedding for Maitra. After the speech, he hallucinates Major Wilkinson and the two talk. We then see everyone getting ready for combat skills training. Cam and Ray talk about Jones, the potential love interest for Cam, and Maitra reveals to Sullivan that he reported Major Wilkinson to the Marines.

Ray meets the female recruit again in the care room and they have a talk. Jones and Cam play a little truth or dare while they look for items, and Santos runs away from Nash to do something. Jones questions Cam on why he was looking at his file, and the two talk about being gay in boot camp. Santos sneaks to the phone to try and call someone, but he is caught by a DI. Once the training concludes, Sergeant McKinnon and Howitt yell at Santos for wandering to try and call his daughter.

That night, Cam follows Jones to the restrooms, thinking a little something might happen. Jones was just sleepwalking, and pisses on the shower floor. The next morning, Sullivan is angry at this, and makes everyone clean up the showers. The second test, hand to hand combat, begins, and Sullivan confronts Jones about his sleepwalking condition, offering to medically discharge him if he does something for him.

In the early morning hours, Howitt allows Santos to make his call, and Sullivan wakes up everyone to make a speech about pain. The final test begins, where the recruits will have to fight each other. Jones reveals to Cam that Sullivan is going to make them fight each other, and they hatch a plan to make it quick. Jones doesn’t follow the plan, telling Cam to not be a faggot about it, and Cam kicks the shit out of him, nearly killing him, before the fight is broken up. That night at a bar, Sullivan makes a call to Fajardo, to ask her about the investigation into Wilkinson. Sullivan then knocks a rude guy upside the head with a beer mug.

It was interesting seeing the love interest in this episode turn into the very thing Cam hates. Seeing Cam beat up Jones was kind of satisfying in a way, because he was finally coming out of his shell. This episode was better than the last one, so hopefully the final episode isn’t a letdown.

Zach Zucconi: I am a 20-year-old from New Jersey. I graduated with an Associate's of the Arts and am currently in the process of completing my Bachelor's in Communications. I have taken part in the university television station where I was able to act in a show and work behind the scenes. I also have hosted a radio show and have been able to learn the mechanical workings on how the radio shows operate. I have always been interested in different video games growing up and have recently become more interested in movies, film, radio, and screenplay. I have created many characters and have many ideas for different movies, video games, and shows. Besides creating the characters and stories, I believe I would also like to take part in them as well.
