Review: ‘Boots’ Season 1, Episode 6 “The Things We Carry”

Episode 6 starts with all the platoons talking about the death of Ochoa. The drill Sergeants are confronted about Ochoa’s death, and Hewitt is suspended from duty. Cameron is called by Sullivan to do his scribe duty, and Cam questions if they are going to do anything for Ochoa. Sullivan consoles him, and tells him to leave.

We then see a flashback involving Sullivan in Guam. In it, we learn of Sullivan’s homosexuality. The next morning, everyone is doing maintenance duty. Ray and Cam have an awkward chat, where Ray reveals the truth about why he failed the Air Force Academy. Sergeant McKinnon tells the recruits Ochoa died from a preexisting heart condition, and that Sergeant Howitt will be rejoining the platoon.

At the mess hall, John runs into Cody, and Santos talks about Howitt getting his comeuppance. Cam also reveals to Ray that he saw Ochoa in pain the night before, and eventually, a food fight ensues, which is eventually broken up by McKinnon. Cam is forced to bring Ochoa’s gear to CIF, and while walking away with his hat, he gets another lecture from his conscience. After a flashback, Sullivan brings some alcohol for the recruits, and they have some drinks in honor of Ochoa.

Sergeant McKinnon talks with Fajardo about what’s going on with the investigation. She reveals the details about Sullivan possibly being gay. This frustrates McKinnon, who doesn’t take too kindly to the investigation, especially given Sullivans decorated past. The recruits bond some more over their drinks, including Cam and Ray, who forgive each other and become best friends again. One more flashback occurs, where Sullivan talks with Maitra. Maitra reveals he heard some scuttlebutt about Sullivan and his relationship with Wilkinson. Maitra tells Sullivan he shouldn’t hang out with him, because he’s a faggot, and that can give people the wrong idea. Later, Sullivan tells Maitra that he’s leaving, and tries to play off his relationship with Wilkinson as him coming onto him. Back in the present, Cameron gets a new bunkie, who he clearly has a crush on.

Episode 6 is another good installment in the series. We finally learn the truth about Sullivan and his mysterious past, and we get some resolutions with Ray and Cams’ friendship. Santos mentioning Howitt getting what’s coming to him raises the question as to whether Howitt is going to be killed, or something else entirely. Overall, the episode was another good addition, not as good as the last one, but still a good one nonetheless. Hopefully the last two have a satisfying conclusion, and don’t drag down the rest of the show.

Zach Zucconi: I am a 20-year-old from New Jersey. I graduated with an Associate's of the Arts and am currently in the process of completing my Bachelor's in Communications. I have taken part in the university television station where I was able to act in a show and work behind the scenes. I also have hosted a radio show and have been able to learn the mechanical workings on how the radio shows operate. I have always been interested in different video games growing up and have recently become more interested in movies, film, radio, and screenplay. I have created many characters and have many ideas for different movies, video games, and shows. Besides creating the characters and stories, I believe I would also like to take part in them as well.
