Review: ‘Agatha All Along’ Season 1, Episode 8 “Follow Me My Friend/To Glory At The End”

Previously on the Disney + series, Agatha All Along, Lilia (Patti LuPone) and Jennifer (Sasheer Zamata) find their way to Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) and Billy (Joe Locke) after being unconscious. Once the coven comes together, Lilia works on the next trial, using tarot cards that are signs of things that have happened in her life. Lilia discovers that Rio (Aubrey Plaza) is Death. After finishing the trial, the Salem Seven come, but Lilia sacrifices herself, saving her three other coven members.

The season finale begins with the now-dead coven member, Alice (Ali Ahn). She wakes up and gets off the floor, face-to-face with Rio, who tells her it’s time to leave. Alice looks at her dead body on the ground and is shocked to find her life is over. Rio tells her that she died protecting someone. She goes with Rio, walking into greenish grey mist.

Next, we see Jennifer and Billy inside the Iron Maiden. Jennifer is banging on the door screaming Lilia’s name. They both realize she sacrificed herself to save them.  Meanwhile, Agatha returns to the road and is stopped by Rio. Rio says that bodies are piling up just like Agatha promised and she realizes that Agatha distracted her from finding out about Billy.

Rio tells Agatha she must take Billy because he stole a second life. However, Agatha realizes Billy can’t simply die, but must surrender to Rio.  Agatha says she can make him turn himself in in exchange for letting her go. They make the deal and Rio leaves, letting Agatha do the rest.

The three members of the coven are back together, Agatha sarcastically excited about the last trial. She trips on the ground and their shoes are there, realizing the Road is a circle. Agatha tells them to keep going and go a second time. Jennifer and Billy hesitate. (We need a better transition here:) Billy refuses to follow the Road’s rules and puts his shoes on Suddenly, the screen goes black and he wakes up in a tarp body bag, in a strange room. Agatha and Jennifer show up there right after.

Once they’re out of the bags, the trial’s countdown begins. Jennifer finds out that Agatha was the one who bound her for 100  years. Jennifer chants an unbinding spell to Agatha, “You hold nothing,” and drops to the floor. As she rises, she has regained her powers. Having gained what she wanted from the Road, she disappears leaving Billy and Agatha.

Agatha then tells Billy she can help him find his brother, Tommy. She sits on the floor and Billy sits with her, closing his eyes. Agatha gets him to focus on his last memories with Tommy. As tension runs high and his memories begin to rise, Agatha grabs his face and he keeps his eyes closed, focusing on Agatha’s voice. Agatha tells him to find Tommy a vessel. Soon, Billy can see a stranger being bullied. The boy is drowning and Billy asks Agatha if he’s killing the boy so Tommy can live. Suddenly, Billy disappears. Agatha talks to herself stating, “No Billy… Sometimes boys die,” and begins to cry.

Agatha remains on the floor as the lights continue the countdown. She opens her locket and finds a single dandelion seed underneath the lock of hair.  A split in the ground from where Billy vanished reveals fresh soil. Adding her tear, she plants the seed for the dandelion to sprout.  She stands up and all the lights turn back on. The ceiling collapses to rubble and dirt. Agatha escapes, running outside to her yard.  Rio is standing on the roof laughing and congratulating her. Agatha still doesn’t have her powers back. Rio says that Agatha is coming with her and begins to break windows, glass cutting into Agatha’s skin.

As she’s on the ground, Agatha chants a spell, Alice’s protection spell, but Rio ties her up against a tree. Before she can get near Agatha, something knocks Rio down. Billy shows up wearing his full Wiccan outfit. He gives Agatha some of his powers to help her. Before he gets too weak, Agatha stops, having all the power she needs. Rio pushes Billy away and she begins to battle Agatha. Billy returns, knocking  Rio into the house before running to Agatha, on the ground.

Billy and Agatha realize they cannot defeat Death, and both agree to surrender. Billy tells Rio he’ll go with her. Instead of offering herself as promised, Agatha offers Billy to Rio. Before she can walk away, Billy speaks to Agatha’s mind, asking if this is how her son died. Agatha turns around and kisses Rio, sacrificing herself Agatha begins to rise above the ground, black smoke surrounding her as she falls, dying. Once she dies, her body roots into the ground, flowers growing above her.

Billy notices her broach on the ground. He grabs it and Rio turns to him, letting him leave. Billy walks to his car and drives off, everyone in the neighborhood watching him. He returns home and his mom, Rebecca (Maria Dizzia), and dad, Jeff (Paul Adelstein) are relieved to have him home.

He goes to his room and he begins to notice a strange cycle of things he has that is related to his time on the Witches’ Road. Billy then realizes he conjured the Witches’ Road with his magic. Suddenly, he hears a laugh behind him and as he turns around, he screams.

Overall, this was a good episode. Jennifer’s bound being released was needed. It was bittersweet to see Agatha die at the end. It’s intriguing how many events on the Road resemble artifacts in Billy’s room. The only questions are, who’s in Billy’s room, and will Rio leave Billy alone now?
