Review: ‘Agatha All Along’ Season 1, Episode 7 “Death’s Hand In Mine”

Previously, on Disney +’s series Agatha All Along, viewers learned more about Teen (Joe Locke), who we now know as William Kaplan, aka Billy Maximoff. Jennifer Kale (Sasheer Zamata) and Lilia (Patti LuPone) are now dead, which means two witches are left. The episode ended with him and Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) agreeing to finish the Witches’ Road together to find his brother and Agatha can get all her powers back.

The seventh episode starts us off with Lilia slowly falling. When the short scene ends, Agatha and Billy walk down the road. Agatha mentions that she’s Wanda Maximoff’s (Elizabeth Olsen) ex-bestfriend. He asks her if she’s dead and she mentions that there’s a possibility she could still be alive. While walking, they notice a strange castle ahead, leading them to their next trial.

Once inside the castle, Agatha is dressed as a classic witch with green skin, while Billy’s costume is more like Maleficent. They find a table of tarot cards, signaling their task.  Their trial is choosing the correct tarot cards for each other. A wrong tarot card releases a lethal sword from the ceiling. Agatha plans to get them all incorrect so there aren’t any more swords on the ceiling when they’re finished. As she gets all the cards wrong, the ceiling lowers, gaining closer to the two.

Next, we see Lilia again. This time, she’s with Jennifer. They’re walking through what looks to be an underground tunnel. Lilia tells her about her dream of falling, which was the first scene in the beginning. Jennifer says that the same thing happened to her. It’s clear Lilia doesn’t remember what’s going on because they’ve been walking for a while. The last thing she remembers is Billy kicking them off the Road. As Jennifer tells her that Billy is Wanda’s son, she freaks out. She then realizes that she’s the one who told Jennifer about that.

Lilia begins having flashbacks of the coven and her trials, then a flashback of when she was a little girl. She comes back to reality, and Jennifer tries to get her to tell her more about herself. Lillia calls her flashbacks ‘gaps’, which she hasn’t had in a while until now. She mentions that they’re getting worse because she’s reaching the end of the Road.

As Lilia talks, she finds herself back with Agatha and Billy. She remembers Billy’s bar mitzvah, which we saw in the previous episode. Billy asks if she’s the one who cast the sigil on him. Lilia confirms she put the sigil on him because she saw what happened to him in the future.

Back in the tunnel, Lilia and Jennifer are still walking. Lilia tells Jennifer that she stopped using her powers when she was younger because she kept seeing death. As she tells her that, they hear Agatha and Billy arguing above them.

They go into the room and Billy hesitates. Lilia assures him they’re on good terms. Lilia decides to do the tarot cards on Billy. She’s showing the cards and they show up to be wrong, swords coming down to the floor.

Lilia has another flashback and is frustrated with the trial. She remembers her falling, stating, “I will fall.” She gets asked what she’ll do with the time she has left. Lilia remembers everything that’s happened after Billy forced them into the ground. Jennifer and Lilia hide as The Seven follows behind them in search of Agatha.

It’s now back to the present and Lilia knows what she has to do. Lilia must read the cards to discover her destination. She places the  Queen of Cups card on the table and no swords fall. She learns that each card represents a member of the coven who has joined her on this journey.

Lilia places the last card on the table and it transitions back to her and Jennifer in the tunnel, falling on their backs. Lilia notices someone in a cloak and it’s Rio. She thinks for a moment and realizes that Rio (Aubrey Plaza) is Death.

After completing the trial, the coven leaves the room, with Lilia closing the door behind them, sacrificing herself. The Salem Seven comes into the room and before they can reach Lilia, she switches The Tower card upright on the table, making her and everyone else inside fall to the swords beneath them.

This was overall a really good episode. The viewers learned more about Lilia and how she’s played a part in all of this. It’s upsetting to see she’s now dead but it shows what kind of character she is, sacrificing herself at the end and also forgiving Billy. It’s exciting to see what comes in the next episode. Will they interact with Rio? What will happen now that it’s just the three coven members?
