Review: ‘Agatha All Along’ Season 1, Episode 5 “Darkest Hour, Wake Thy Power”

Previously on the Disney+ series, Agatha All Along, Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) and her coven prepared for their next trial as they buried Mrs. Hart (Debra Jo Rupp). The coven added a new witch to their group, Rio Vidal (Aubrey Plaza).  Their next trial turned out to be Alice Wu-Gulliver’s (Ali Ahn) generational curse. After the trial, Teen (Joe Locke) became unconscious, so Jennifer Kale (Sasheer Zamata) created a healing spell, which luckily worked. At the end of the episode, Rio tells Agatha that Teen isn’t her son.

The next episode begins with a raccoon roaming around the woods. More animals show up and the Salem Seven appear. Lilia Caldreu (Patti LuPone) wakes up, telling everyone they must leave. She can sense that the Salem Seven are coming for them. They all start running as Agatha comes to them.

To escape, they make flying brooms from the roots of the trees. They fly off into the air, making it off the Witches’ Road. As they’re flying, suddenly they’re forced down.

They quickly reach their next trial, which mimics an 80s horror film. Teen realizes he doesn’t have the spell book to help them. He asks whose trial it is and Rio laughs, saying it’s Agatha’s. Lilia notices a blood moon. Teen finds an Ouija board and the timers on their watches begin, giving them thirty minutes to complete the trials.

The coven sits down, each of them having their hands on top of the planchette. Agatha begins to ask the questions. The spirit in connection with them is Mrs. Hart (Debra Jo Rupp), which surprises them all.

Lilia’s hands are forced off the planchette, which defeats the rule of not letting go of the planchette at any cost. Agatha’s head begins to spin and she gets possessed by Mrs. Hart. But, Rio recognizes Agatha’s just acting, which causes her to stop the act. Both Agatha and Lilia put their hands back on the planchette. When they ask again who’s there with them, “death” shows up, to punish Agatha.

Agatha lets go and everything goes chaotic. Jennifer yells “Punish Agatha,” meaning they must punish her to complete the trial.

As they turn around, Agatha is gone from her spot. The lights go dark and they hear heavy breathing. Teen feels something dripping down and looks up at the ceiling, seeing Agatha possessed as a demon.

Agatha disappears again and Agatha’s mother’s spirit, Evanora Harkness (Kate Forbes), shows up. Agatha returns to herself as the Salem Seven have unfinished business with her. The coven must finish the Witches’ Road without her.

She pleads to the coven to take her with them as Agatha’s mother possesses her body again. Alice projects fire from her hands to protect Agatha. It works, but Agatha begins to take Alice’s power. Teen grabs the Ouija board and spells out Nicholas Scratch, stopping Agatha. Their alarms go off and Alice is now dead. Teen yells at Agatha, telling her it’s her fault.

Agatha leaves the house and notices she now has Alice’s power. Teen follows after her, yelling at her again. She tells him she couldn’t control it, but he doesn’t believe her. All Agatha wants is power, from each of them.

Agatha evilly snickers at Teen as he tells her he won’t let her take his power. She tells him that he’s “so much” like his mother. Suddenly, Lilia and Jennifer grab Agatha by her shoulders as Teen uses his powers to toss her into the sinking ground. Then Teen throws his hands up, making Jennifer and Lilia sink as well.

The episode ends with Teen wearing a crown, much like the Scarlett Witch’s aka Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), who is revealed as his mother.

Overall, this was a much-needed episode. Agatha was punished by her coven and Teen, who showed his true colors. What will happen now that he has turned on them?

Rating: 9/10
