Review: ‘Agatha All Along’ Season 1, Episode 3 “Through Many Miles/ Of Tricks and Trials”

Previously on the new Disney+ series, Agatha All Along, Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) and Teen (Joe Locke) decide to go to The Witches’ Road. To do so, they would need to create a coven. They chose to bring in four witches; Lilia Caldreu (Patti LuPone), Mrs. Hart (Debra Jo Rupp), Jennifer Kale (Sasheer Zamata), and Alice Wu-Gulliver (Ali Ahn). Everyone met at Agatha’s house, to do the spell to go to The Witches’ Road, which is successful.

The third episode starts with the coven walking through the road. Mrs. Hart is confused about what exactly is going on. She’s the only one who isn’t truly a witch. As they try to figure out what’s going on, they learn that they may have to face their true fears for the witch trials.

Lilia learns that Teen has a sigil on him, to hide him, which explains why he can’t talk about himself or say his name.

Mrs. Hart ends up alone as she walks away from the group. She drops her purse on the ground and it begins to sink into the grass. She yells as she tries to tug it out. The rest of the coven goes over to her, trying to help but failing. As they’re talking, Jennifer notices a house, with bright sunshine ahead of them.

They walk to the house and ring the doorbell before walking inside. As they get inside, their outfits and hairstyles change. Agatha notices the door doesn’t have a doorknob and the windows don’t open. Teen finds an invitation, a riddle for the first trial.

Jennifer goes over to Teen, telling him to be careful with Agatha. She lets him know that Agatha gave up her child to get the Book of the Damned. He tells her it probably isn’t true and Jennifer sarcastically says he may be right.

Suddenly, a wine bottle and glasses appear on the kitchen table. They all gather in the living room and Mrs. Hart downs a glass of wine. After she does that, a timer begins at 30 minutes. They go to the couch and sit down, all drinking their wine. Agatha doesn’t drink hers, secretly pouring it out of the sink, only for it to come back into her glass, without her noticing.

Mrs. Hart begins to speak about how she wants her wrinkles to go away and her face ends up swollen. They all realize they’ve been poisoned as their faces swell, except for Teen and Agatha.

Agatha hides her face so they don’t know she didn’t drink the wine. Alice tells the coven that she loves them and their faces return to normal. Teen notices that Agatha hasn’t touched her wine and she freaks out about being stuck in the house. They tell her that she has to drink the wine.

Teen tells her to drink and she hesitates, only to do so out of peer pressure. As Agatha downs her glass, Mrs. Hart starts to have a hallucination of Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), before passing out on the couch.

The coven begins to grab things needed to survive the first trial alive. One by one, Alice, Lilia, and Jennifer begin to have hallucinations. Jennifer sees a former colleague, perhaps a doctor, who violently tries to drown her in the sink. Lilia sees a young girl dressed in a Victorian dress who morphs into a haunting old woman haunted by a figure shrouded in a black cloak. And Alice encounters her mother who warns her something is coming to kill Alice.

After their hallucinations end, They realize they don’t have much time left, so they carry Mrs. Hart, who’s still unconscious, to the kitchen and put their items in the sink, making sure the count is correct. As they’re working on the spell, Agatha hallucinates hearing a baby crying in a bassinet. As she approaches to uncover the child, it’s revealed to be The Darkhold. Jennifer yells her name and Agatha comes back to reality.

Jennifer begins to freak out about them missing an ingredient and Agatha calms her down, reaffirming that even though they stole her power, they did not take her knowledge. Jennifer realizes they need the blood of the unpoisoned, and Agatha cuts Teen’s hand. He adds his blood and the spell works. They hurriedly drink the antidote saving themselves. Suddenly, they remember Mrs. Hart and pass the potion for her to drink. With the trial complete, the oven door opens providing their exit.

They all make it out safely, ending up in their original clothes. The last scene is Agatha saying, “Who’s Sharon,” when Teen says she (Mrs. Hart) is dead.

Overall, this was a hilarious episode, seeing them all freak out with their swollen faces. But, it also showed a hint of each of their pasts (aside from Teen). What will happen now that the coven is down to five?
