Review: ‘1923’, Season 2, Episode 6 “The Mountain Teeth of Monsters”

In the most recent episode of 1923, the Duttons at the ranch hear of Spencer’s return from the town’s sheriff. Jacob and the sheriff both acknowledge that Spencer’s return will undoubtedly begin the war over the ranch and begin to plan. Jacob will bring some of the boys to the train station with the sheriff to ensure Spencer’s safe arrival, while others keep the women safe inside. Upon their arrival, they find that the train never arrived, most likely due to the weather. The next train is to arrive in three days, so the group patiently camps out at the station.

Jack becomes worried and agitated that he’s stuck on the ranch while the others are at risk of danger. Despite orders, he rides out to meet the others at the station, ignoring Elizabeth’s warning of danger. Elizabeth was correct concerning the danger of the journey. Within the woods, Jack runs into two of Donald’s men, who ultimately shoot and kill him without hesitation. The men make their way to the station to complete their mission and kill the other Duttons.

Meanwhile, Alexandra continues her journey to the ranch with the couple she met while waiting on the train. They offer her a ride to Montana, explaining the journey would only take three days by car. They celebrate by drinking on their ride, excited for the adventure.

While getting gas, Hillary and Alexandra went into the station to ask for directions. The woman at the front desk explains that their journey is impossible; there aren’t any gas stations beyond their current location, and the snow will inhibit their arrival. The couple pays no attention to this warning and continues to drive out into the blizzard. As Alexandra awakens from the cold, she finds both Paul and Hillary frozen to death, leaving her stranded in an unknown frozen wasteland.

Meanwhile, in Texas, Pastor Marshall Kent finds that Renaud killed another native (Pete Plenty Clouds) on their pursuit of Teonna. Infuriated, the two come upon the disagreements of their journey, leading to Father Renaud killing Kent.

Teonna and Runs His Horse find Pete Plenty Clouds’s body along with lawman Marshal Kent. Now that the lawman is dead, their goals are to be reevaluated. They sleep near Pete’s body after planning their return to Montana. Suddenly, Father Renaud finds their fire, shooting Runs His Horse and killing him. He approaches Teonna with a gun to her head. He demands her to repent, but she refuses. Before killing her, she pushes ash into his face, making him drop the gun. She then shoots him, hysterical and crying. She has no one left, leaving her hopeless.

This episode delivered a series of intense, edge-of-your-seat moments, from Teonna finally breaking free from her relentless pursuers to the heartbreaking loss of Jack. As the season reaches its boiling point, every character faces mounting pressure, and the stakes have never been higher. Spencer’s unexpected delay adds even more uncertainty to the Duttons’ already precarious situation, all while Alexandra’s harrowing journey leaves audiences questioning whether she’ll ever reach a breaking point, setting the stage for what promises to be a gripping and emotional showdown in the episodes ahead. Even though this episode was thrilling, it contained notable, nerve-wracking plot holes, such as Alexandra being the only one surviving the winter cold and Pastor Marshall wanting to kill Teonna, despite hating Renaud killing natives. These inconsistencies made this episode a difficult watch, despite its enthralling intensity.
