Teonna continues to escape the lawmen as they put out her wanted posters in multiple states. Marshal Kent finds the cowboys that Teonna was working with and questions them. While it was hard for the cowboys to believe that such a young girl could kill, they decided to help after Father Renaud reassured them that Teonna had murdered her school’s nuns. Marshal Kent and Father Renaud follow Teonna’s trail into the desert, where they plan to corner the group by staying near the only watering hole.
Pete, Hank, and Teonna begin to realize they are lost and without water. The group plans to take a new route to Mexico, seeing that Teonna is wanted everywhere in Texas. Pete Plenty Clouds separates from the group to find water. On his journey, Pete discovers Marshal Kent and Father Renaud, leading to a shoot-off.
Meanwhile, Sheriff Joy makes her way to stop Marshal Kent and Father Renaud’s ruthless pursuit. While she has been tracking their movements, she learns of their brutal methods, leading the sheriff to wonder about the legality of their bloody manhunt. Sheriff Joy finds Spencer Dutton during her investigation and brings him into custody. There, she confirms his identity and gives him a train ticket home. While Spencer’s arrival is much needed on the ranch, the Sheriff in his hometown aims to intervene.
Alexandra continues her journey on the train, though she has no food or money after being robbed at the station. She works in the dining cart to get free dinner and to collect tips. Her situation began to look less bleak, though she quickly became a victim of sexual assault while she was waiting on a customer. Alexandra dissociates, then courageously defends herself, almost going too far. The assaulter is left bloodied after she beat his head multiple times with a coffee pot. The train conductor detains her and summons the police when they get to the next station. Before the police take her away, two witnesses defend her, leading to her release and the assaulter’s arrest.
Alexandra makes her way through the train station only to find that her train has been canceled. The weather in Montana was too harsh, and not enough tickets were sold. Defeated, Alexandra is left with nothing; no food, money, or means of transportation. The couple that aided her earlier sees her turmoil and invites her to stay with them. Reluctantly, Alexandra joins them to freshen up after her travels.
Donald Whitfield and Banner Creighton continue their partnership, looking into creating ski resorts with the Duttons’ land. Banner now works closely with Donald, learning of his dark habit of abusing women. He disposes of the body that Donald orders to be taken out of the house. Noticing that the woman doesn’t appear to have died of an overdose, he begins to wonder about his loyalty to Donald.
Donald’s lover, Lindy, looks for a new, additional woman to suit his appetite. She walks the streets to find another woman looking for quick money. Despite her suspicion, this woman is seduced and taken back to Donald’s home.
Episode five highlights Alexandra’s continued struggles in America. Not only is she beaten and robbed, but she is also forced to work despite being physically and mentally exhausted—especially while pregnant. After enduring so many hardships, one can only hope she will finally find rest and comfort, as her journey has been relentlessly grim.
Not only does this season continue to struggle with pacing, but Alexandra’s unceasing struggles bog down her narrative, making this episode difficult to watch. However, the two gallant characters, Spencer and Sheriff Joy, cross paths, allowing this series to gain momentum. This fortunate meeting expedited Specner’s journey, offering a beat change to the pacing and injecting fresh energy into the plot.
