Review: ‘1923’ Season 2, Episode 3 “Wrap Thee in Terror”

Episode three of the newest season of 1923 continues as both Jacob and Spencer make their way back to the ranch while Cara takes care of Elizabeth. Spencer’s wife, Alexandrea, is pregnant and sets sail on her voyage to America to reunite with Spencer. Meanwhile, Teonna continues to escape the state with her father and his ally.

While Jacob Dutton makes his way back to the ranch in Montana, snow covers the ground. The weather is frigid, and the horses have escaped to seek shelter. The children and Zane are left helpless, though Zane insists on burning the wagon to keep the group warm as he rides horseback.

Elizabeth remains alive after the second wolf attack. To her frustration, Cara continued giving  Elizabeth her shot to ensure she didn’t have rabies. While Cara argues that Elizabeth is acting foolish for denying her shots, Elizabeth cries and vows she’s leaving as soon as her husband returns.

Alexandrea arrives in New York, though she must be processed and documented before entry. She quickly realizes that she is trapped in an invasive, inhumane process. As she waits to see a doctor, she learns that pregnant women are not allowed entry into the country. Alexandrea tries to hide her pregnancy, but the doctor knows this by inspecting her stomach. She then has to argue her intentions and purpose in America. Being a smart, educated woman, she’s able to prove her intelligence and capabilities by outsmarting the integration officer, pointing out he received physical, intimate payment from the previous immigrant.

Teonna’s father discusses business with the local cowboys. These men not only allow them to stay on the land but also offer them pay if they help collect the cattle. While their situation seems too good to be true, it may be. Meanwhile, the local sheriff, Mamie Fossett, investigates the killing of native children by the lawmen who are after Teonna. Mamie works closely with the natives, promising them she will find justice for the children.

Marshal Kent and Father Renaud continued their search, only ten miles away from Teonna. As Teonna will need money, they figure she is with the cowboys, as they do not discriminate. The two followed closely, knowing that they would soon catch up.

Jacob and the group arrive at the ranch while the doctor is still there. After the doctor’s inspection, he concludes that Zane has a subdural hematoma. The only option for him is to die, or for the doctor to drill a hole in his skull to release the blood and fluid. The doctor doesn’t have the tools, staff, or anesthesia.

This episode focuses on Alexandra’s journey to the United States, along with the change of culture. Her entry into America showcased how harsh and cold this new land is. She quickly finds that this trip to Montana will be more dangerous than she thought; she must watch for pickpockets and brace herself for the cold. This overall showed Alexandrea’s resilience, which is a trait needed in Montana. Elizabeth is also a city girl in a new land, although she does not have the strength or drive that Alexandra does. Audiences may anticipate Alexandra’s journey and her adaptation to a new environment, as well as Spencer’s journey coming to an end as he escapes the mafia. Overall this episode has taken time to build up the anticipation of the Dutton’s reuniting, making viewers eager for new developments.
