‘Cobra Kai’ Season 5 Review Episode 9 “Survivors”

Netflix’s Original Series Cobra Kai episode nine “Survivors” starts with William Zabka’s Johnny Lawrence and Vanessa Rubio’s Carmen Diaz attending the sonogram of their baby. During this the viewer sees the look pure joy on both of their faces when they see it. Johnny then mentions how he never attended any of the sonograms with his first son. This is due to him not being ready to be father at the time. Now things have changed, and he is ready to be a father for his second child as well as Xolo Mariduena’s Miguel Diaz. In his mind, he is scared of messing up yet again with the new baby even though Carmen keeps reassuring him that he will be fine. This shows that Johnny is truly a different man then the one who did not care about his first child. Having seen the sonogram causes him to show regret for not being there for his son as a result. Regardless how sacred he is he still chooses to be there for his new family. He even goes as far as to face down Thomas Griffith’s Terry Silver when he gets on the same elevator with them. This is due to him knowing how dangerous Silver can be as well as the type of tactics he uses to manipulate his enemies.

A couple minutes into the episode, Johnny, Ralph Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso, Carmen, and Yuji Okumoto’s Chozen Toguchi, and Courtney Henggeler’s Amanda LaRusso go to a club to celebrate Carmen and Johnny’s new baby. The interesting thing is Daniel and Chozen have a moment where they both talk about Tamlyn Tomita’s Kumiko where Chozen expresses his desire to be with her. However, he believes that he does not deserve the right to be with her due to how in the past he treated her horribly. Daniel seeing how much Chozen’s changed tells him to let go of the past and forgive himself since Kumiko has as well. Luckily, Chozen decides to follow his advice and he calls Kumiko telling her in his own way that he has feelings her. In his mind, he feels ashamed of what he did to her in the past. However, given as how he is a little drunk, he feels like he could muster up the courage to at least try. This by far is the kindest moment for Chozen to have in the series.

At the end of the episode, the viewer sees Peyton List’s Tory Nichols get punished for running away during a critical time for cobra kai. Where she is forced to punch a solid stone dummy until it breaks. This shows how brutal the teachings of cobra kai can be for someone who has a good heart. Not mention that, for the viewer it shows just how far Tory’s character is willing to go to put a stop to cobra kai. She even sacrifices her relationship with Tanner Buchanan’s Robby Keene to end it once and for all.
