‘Cobra Kai’ Season 5 Review: Episode 1 “Long, Long Way From Home”

Netflix’s Original Series Cobra Kai kicks off its new season with a look at the aftermath from the tournament. Where Ralph Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso has a confrontation with his wife Courtney Henggeler’s Amanda LaRusso regarding cobra kai. In his mind, he feels that he has a responsibility to stop cobra kai. This is due to how in his early years he has seen firsthand how brutal that dojo can be to its students. Also, he knows that Thomas Griffith’s Terry Sliver is an unstable person. This is due to him having one of his former students beat him when he did not want to fight when he was younger. In fact, it can be said that his actions are what cemented Danie’s morals. Daniel tries to do good in the world to honor the teachings of his sensei while he knows that part of his life is getting in the way of his personal life as well. So far, he has been neglecting his duties as a husband by not spending time with his wife. She knows that dealing with cobra kai is important to him which is why she is patient. Although, she has her limits just like any other married individual. Which is why the series does an excellent job of portraying a genuine marriage with its ups and down.

A few minutes into the episode, and the viewer sees Xolo Mariduena’s Miguel Diaz searching for his father and possibly for who he is in Mexico. This is a result of his father being absent from all of Miguel’s life. Furthermore, it can be seen as an added result of William Zabka’s Jonny Lawrence using him as a substitute for his own son who he failed. As he meets his potential father who is not a good man a horrible thought comes to mind from the look the viewer sees on his face. In his mind, he sees this horrible man who looks to be a criminal as his potential future. He believes that his aggression is passed down from father to son. Not to mention that, seeing how he is Miguel now knows why his mother never talks about him. Luckily, the man turns out not to his father much to his happiness as the viewer sees a slight smile on his face.

Later in the episode, Miguel finds a new man who could be his father the interesting thing is he has a family of his own. At first the viewer can tell he feels abandoned when he sees how happy the man is with his wife and son. As a result of him not knowing his father it can be inferred that all his live, he has dreamed of his father wanting to find him. Or that his father was miserable with him in his life. Unfortunately, all those dreams come crashing down when he sees the man pick up his son while smilingly. The interesting part is when Miguel meets the son due to his ball rolling next to Miguel, he acts lovingly to his potential little brother instead of showing hatred. Miguel could hate him due to having a loving father when he had no father most of his life. However, he chose not to blame anything on the man’s son instead choosing to be nice to him. He even goes as far to rescue him from being ran over by a truck driver. Ultimately, that earns him a dinner at the man’s house as a thank you for saving his son with the implication that Miguel will talk to him about how he could be his father.
