Disney Plus’s original series ‘Andor’ season one episode ten, entitled “One Way Out” starts with Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor and Andy Serkis’s Kino Loy as they discuss how to help everyone break out of prison. From what the viewer can see Kino is still having doubts about if they should go through with everything. In his head, he wants to escape and not die in prison like everyone usually does as they get moved around. However, he knows that what they are doing is extremely risky especially if their plan doesn’t work and could get them killed. It could be argued that his reluctance can come from the programing that the inmates due to having to constantly act like obedient robots. Also, it can come from cowardice as he has never done anything like this before and he is scared of dying.
Additionally, the viewer is invited to a scene between Genevieve O’Reilly’s Mon Mothma and a well-known criminal. Mon Mothma has dipped into the underworld slightly to acquire this criminal’s connections to set up fake accounts to help fund the rebellion. Unfortunately, the price for his help is her daughter having get engaged to the criminal’s son for political standing. In her mind, she doesn’t want to do this especially since her daughter values her independence as a young woman. The interesting part about this is how it is revealed that on her planet teenagers getting engaged is part of a long-standing tradition. However, the viewer can see by the look on her face that while she rejects the idea, she may not have a choice. This makes her to be one of the most interesting characters in the series as she now is caught in between her daughter and the rebellion.
Later into the episode, the viewer catches up with Stellan Skarsgard’s Luthen Rael as he meets with an informant inside the imperial security force where he threatens him with the implication of killing him so he will keep reporting on the empire. This is a result of the informant wanting to be let go so he can continue his life in peace with his family. However, the informant then has a moment where he questions the lack of sacrifice from Luthen. This leads to Luthen finally giving the viewer an insight into his mind as a result of his loyalty and sacrifice, being called into question. In his mind, he knows that he has sacrificed everything for the rebellion such love, family, and friends. He believes that everything he has done, both good and bad, will lead to him being punished in the end. He knows that he is just someone in the shadows that will never get credit for what he has done. The rebellion is all that matters in his eyes even if they treat him as a monster due to the crude methods of the enemy he uses. That is the type of sacrifice he makes on a daily basis for the rebellion.
At the end of the episode, the viewer sees Andor and Kino as they enact their plan of escape with everyone on board for it. The fascinating part about this is how Andor has become a sort of leader for the prisoners during the escape. This is due to how he has now more experience with working with a team demonstrating his leadership by encouraging everyone to break free from their oppression. Ultimately, this leads everyone successfully escaping, only Kino chooses to stay as he cannot swim, much to Andor’s dismay as he does not want to leave him behind. By the look on Kino’s face the viewer can tell that while he wanted to escape, he is okay with staying as he is now free spiritually.
