Tragic news has struck many fans this evening as NBC has announced that their show, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, will not return for a third season. These fans have not gone down quietly as soon after Twitter was blowing up with the hashtag, #SaveZoeysPlaylist.
The season of cancellations and renewals is always a tough one for showrunners, actors, and fans. It is equally tough on executives of the networks and streaming services who have to make critical decisions on these shows. Many programs have ratings lower than wanted by the network, but the fans that watch it are vehement supporters which makes pulling the plug so hard.
Via Variety, this circumstance seems to be the case with Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist which was circulating all over Twitter after the news dropped. Thousands of people took the social media platform to air their grievances with NBC which had opted against a third installment.
The strong and loud fan base definitely kept the show on life support for a bit longer. There were talks of moving the show to Peacock for the third season, keeping it alive in a less risky position for the station. These talks fell flat, and the show had to be cancelled.
The huge setback on the show has not stopped Lionsgate Television, a co-producer of the program. The company is looking to shop it around to other networks and see if anything fits. In an announcement from Lionsgate Television obtained by Variety, a spokesperson for the company said, “In a world where finding loyal and passionate audiences is never easy, we believe there must be a home for this great, award-winning show with a passionate and dedicated following.”
Fans will have to wait and see where the Jane Levy-led (Don’t Breathe) musical series will land, if it does, in fact, move to a new network.
