The Streaming empire Netflix may have just landed another hit for themselves by ordering From Scratch, a limited series that will be starring Zoe Saldana. Deadline has reported the Avatar star will be lending her influence to the new show as an executive producer as well, alongside Reese Witherspoon who will be executive producing the show under her production company, Hello Sunshine. The production company, 3 Arts Entertainment, will also have a hand in bringing From Scratch to life. The show is based on the best selling memoir of the same name written by Tembi Locke, an actress who can be found in television shows such as Slider and Eureka. The showrunner will be Attica Locke, Tembi’s sister.
According to Deadline, From Scratch is an autobiographical romance story. The series focuses on a woman from the United States who goes to Italy to study abroad, and ends up finding the love of her life in a Sicilian man. The two soulmates later return to America to build a life together and to nurture the love they’ve found by chance. Unfortunately, things change for the worse when the woman’s other half unexpectedly succumbs to a fatal illness, leaving her a heartbroken single mother raising their daughter. After her husband’s death, the woman must find a way to persevere through her grief so she can raise their daughter to the best of her ability without the help, or support, of a significant other.
Given the story’s sensitive subject matter, Zoe Saldana is passionate about spreading Tembi’s story to a wide audience with the expectation that the show will move others the same way it apparently moved her. “This is a profound true story of love and family, deprivation and nourishment, that needs to be brought to life on the big screen as Tembi Locke brought it vividly to life for me on the page.” Saldana said. “We are grateful to Netflix and thrilled to be working with Reese, Lauren, Attica and 3 Arts on this wonderful project.”
Witherspoon also sung praises to their upcoming series, saying, “Tembi’s memoir is a raw and tender exhibition of life in all its pieces. She brings you into her love, her loss and her resilience with such vulnerability and strength. We immediately fell for Attica and Tembi’s vision and feel honored to have the opportunity to help bring it to life onscreen.”
Given the care behind the upcoming project, everyone involved already seems to be on a mission to make sure From Scratch gets the five star treatment it deserves, making a strong case that Tembi’s powerful story is in good hands.
