According to an article by Deadline, the current contract between Fox and YouTube TV is set to expire on Wednesday, with talks of a new deal stalled. This could leave Fox’s content on YouTube TV unavailable to subscribers beginning August 27th. They are offering a $10 credit if the content is not accessible for an extended period of time.
Deadline reported that Fox posted a statement regarding the dispute that reads as follows: “While Fox remains committed to reaching a fair agreement with Google’s YouTube TV, we are disappointed that Google continually exploits its outsized influence by proposing terms that are out of step with the marketplace. The statement continues, “We are alerting Fox viewers who are YouTube TV subscribers that they could lose access to much of their favorite news, sports, entertainment, and local station programming unless Google engages in a meaningful way soon.”
NBC Sports also reported on the dispute; they claim that the issue will not affect NFL Ticket games on the YouTube TV platform. A statement by an NFL official reads, “The games in the NFL Sunday Ticket package on YouTube and YouTube TV only include out-of-market Sunday afternoon regular-season NFL games. NFL Sunday Ticket subscribers will continue to have access to all out-of-market games (both CBS and FOX). Games in the local market are not available within NFL Sunday Ticket and would be impacted on YouTubeTV if the potential dispute is not resolved by the start of Week 1.”
Per Deadline, YouTube TV also released a statement regarding the negotiations. “Our current agreement with Fox is approaching its renewal date, and we are in active negotiations to continue carrying their content. Our priority is to reach a deal that’s fair for both sides and allows us to preserve the value of our service. … We’re committed to continuing to work with Fox to reach an agreement, but if their content becomes unavailable for an extended period of time, we’ll offer our subscribers a $10 credit.” It seems they are trying to get to an agreement, but want to remain firm on what they consider a fair deal on their side. They have already prepared for a no-deal by announcing the possibility of an incoming credit.
Deadline listed some of the channels that will be affected if negotiations continue to stall. These include Fox, all of the Fox Sports channels, Fox News, Fox Business, Fox Nation, and other add-ons not named.
