While the final season of TV Land’s Younger is slated to premiere this week, creator Darren Star (Emily in Paris) has been said to be developing a spinoff series, which would keep his characters alive for a bit longer, according to Variety. The potential spinoff would be centered around Hilary Duff’s (Lizzie McGuire) character, editor-turned-publisher Kelsey Peters.
Younger, launched in 2015, follows Liza, played by Sutton Foster (Bunheads), a single mom attempting to re-enter the workforce at the age of 40. While this series was based in New York City, the spinoff is said to be set in Los Angeles. Star’s credits include Melrose Place, Sex and the City, Beverly Hills 90210, and most recently, Emily in Paris. Of the development of a spinoff series, Star said, “We’re talking about it. It’s been a big question mark whether it’s going to happen. It could be great, but we never know if these things are going to happen until they’re going to happen,” via Variety. He also noted that the series would not include any other Younger characters, except for Kelsey, “It would be a totally new universe,” via Variety.
Similar to several of Star’s shows, the sitcom is told from the female perspective, emphasizing the significance of female relationships alongside career goals rather than just romantic storylines. Duff’s character plays the role of Liza’s newfound best friend following her return to the book publishing industry. The duo navigates the cut-throat world of publishing together, both from different backgrounds and different generations.
Duff’s schedule just recently cleared up for a spinoff after facing disappointment with the failure of a planned Lizzie McGuire revival at Disney+ late last year, stating, “Sadly and despite everyone’s best efforts, it isn’t going to happen….I want any reboot of Lizzie to be honest and authentic to who Lizzie would be today. It’s what the character deserves…We can all take a moment to mourn the amazing woman she would have been and the adventures we would have taken with her. I’m very sad, but I promise everyone tried their best and the stars just didn’t align,” as Variety reports.
Star describes the potential spinoff as a “female Entourage with Kelsey as the lead.” Still, he maintains that “the caveat is if it’s going to happen,” via Variety.
