Television’s favorite serial killer is back in action. Netflix announced on Monday that its romance thriller has begun production again. After a long hiatus due to COVID-19, Penn Badgley (Gossip Girl) is returning to the role of Joe for the upcoming third season of You via Entertainment Weekly.
Netflix took to Instagram Monday to reveal the exciting news of You’s return. It shared a photograph of its star Badgley. Badgley is notably wearing a mask while on set, as television shows now must follow several guidelines and precautions due to COVID-19. See the post below:
You follows Joe, a strange and lonely bookstore manager in New York. A serial killer with a thirst for love, when it comes to romantic relationships he becomes unhealthily obsessed. The first season took place in New York following Joe’s relationship to Guinevere Beck, portrayed by Elizabeth Lail (Once Upon a Time). The second season took place in Los Angeles, where he met his current obsession, Love Quinn, portrayed by Victoria Pedretti (The Haunting of Bly Manor).
A Netflix original, You is based on the book written by Caroline Kepnes. Published in 2014, it was the first in the series telling the story of Joe and his escapades into dangerous obsessions and romance. The second book, Hidden Bodies, was published in 2016. The third book in the series, You Love Me, is not coming out until April 2021, hinting that the television show is now headed in a different direction than the novels.
The second season of You left off with several cliffhangers and questions. Many things remain a mystery, but a few things are certain. Along with Badgley, the show announced season three will star newcomer to the show Scott Speedman (Animal Kingdom). Speedman will be playing Matthew, a CEO and potential prey to Joe. Season three will also see the return of Joe’s love interest, Quinn.
