‘You’ Penn Badgley Explains Joe’s Voiceovers

Penn Badgley (John Tucker Must Die) explains some oddities for his character Joe on Netflix‘s You, via Variety. During Variety’s Actors on Actors issue with Chace Crawford, Badgley explained he often will ad-lib when recording Joe’s ominous voiceovers, with co-creators Greg Berlanti (Love, Simon) and Sera Gamble (Supernatural) supporting these unscripted moments. “I think actually where I improv the most, ironically, is in the voiceover booth,” Badgley said via Variety. “[Berlanti and Gamble] really trust me to go in there.”

“I go in there alone, save the engineer and a co-producer, and I get almost no direction sometimes,” Badgley said via Variety. “I just go through an entire episode, and we’ve not shot it yet generally — so as it comes out of my mouth, you realize there’s something about this logic. There’s often so many different layers of a moment: he’s saying one thing to the person he’s in the scene with; he’s thinking another about them; but also, this [other] person who maybe he’s killed and they’re in the trunk of his car. Meanwhile, he’s tweeting or texting or something to cover it up, and then he’s also thinking about what he’s going to do in the next scene.”

You is a Netflix original series hit, premiering in 2018 stars Badgley as Joe Goldberg. Goldberg is seemingly normal man until his disturbing dating habits are revealed and how he affects the individuals’ lives that he enters. The series also stars Ambyr Childers (We Are What We Are) as Candance Stone, Victoria Pedretti (The Haunting of Hill House) as Love Quinn, and Elizabeth Lail (Once Upon A Time) as Guinevere Beck. Badgley also won an ELLE Style International Star award for his acting.

You has 2 seasons out on Netflix, with confirmed season 3 coming soon.
