With the amazing return of season five of Yellowstone Part B, Kevin Costner (Open Range, Field of Dreams), who portrays John Dutton, has been rumored not to be returning. According to TVLine, he is riding his last horse off into the sunset, as he has confirmed that he will not return.
Christina Voros (Ma,127 Hours), who directed four of the six episodes, which premieres on Paramount Network on Sunday at 8/7c, tells TVLine sister site The Hollywood Reporter that the uncompromising head of the Dutton family continues to have a significant impact on the events. “His existence is essential.
According to TVLine, Voros said, “I think to say any more than that,” she added, “would potentially compromise all the work that went into redacting the scripts” to keep the plot twists secret. “But I think the reason people are wondering, ‘Is he, isn’t he? Where is he, where is he not?’ is because he is the patriarch, and his presence is an essential component to the story. John Dutton is still central.”
Perhaps even more intriguing, she remains ambiguous about Costner’s presence on set.
Voros continuously expresses how the character Dutton’s departure will affect the show. She goes a little in-depth about how, through the first read, actors usually get a sense of their character in the show and discover what’s happening themselves.
In the TVLine article, Voros explained that when she first read the script, “It made me feel really lucky to get to direct it. Taylor always has a sense of where something is going to end, and the joy is watching him find how we get there. So, all I can say is… I felt tremendously grateful to be a part of telling this chapter in the story.”
