Yellowjackets creators go in depth in a Hollywood Reporter interview on the future of the show and its characters. The couple Ashley Lyle (Narcos) and Bart Nickerson (Narcos) paired up to write the hit show in 2021 and since then, has won twenty-eight awards. The success of the show is solely owed to the twists and turns written within. The series follows a traveling high school soccer team whose plane crashes in the Canadian wilderness, leaving them stranded for eighteen months. With such a plot, fans come back for more with each plot twist.
Not only is the writing some of the best we’ve seen but the cast is nothing short of star-studded. As the show flips back and forth between 1996 and 2021, we see the characters younger and older. One character that stuck out in particular was Natalie played by Juliette Lewis (Ma) as her older version and Sophie Thatcher (Heteric) as her younger version. In the season two finale fans were heartbroken over her death and questioned what the show would be like without her. However, some argue that it was inevitable for her character to die. Fans found it easy to understand her character as she is a person who deals with complex trauma and addiction.
Lyle and Nickerson shared in their interview with The Hollywood Reporter why it was the right time to say goodbye to her character. “We had planted that very specifically in the pilot; we always knew that was going to be the outcome. “But [planning her death] was pretty early in season two, and I think it will become pretty clear the way in which it was designed to not only be a big moment and a big death, but a catalyst for story moving forward in season three. I think that will become more apparent to the audience as they’re watching season three.”
Despite the upset reviews, Natalie’s character is not gone yet. We are still guaranteed to see her in the flashbacks of the show as character deaths were never set in stone. We’ve seen before that characters make an appearance in the form of ghosts. Fans highly anticipate even crazier plot twists come February 14th streaming on Paramount + for the season 3 premiere.
