British actor Peter Gadiot (Queen of the South, Yellowjackets) has recently been cast as ‘Red Hair’ Shanks in the upcoming live-action Netflix series based on the prolific Japanese manga series One Piece, according to Variety.
Based on the manga by Eiichiro Oda (Romance Dawn Pt I & II, Monsters), One Piece tells the story of a Monkey D. Luffy who, with the help of his Straw Hat pirate crew, seeks to become the king of the pirates and find the “One Piece” treasure left behind by the legendary former pirate king Gol D. Roger. The live-action show also follows in the footsteps of the still-running anime series of over a thousand episodes.
The decision by Netflix to produce another popular anime series comes after the decision to cancel the live-action Cowboy Bebop show after one season shortly after its premiere. The story may turn out differently this time, however, due in part to the massive popularity of One Piece currently in the United States.
According to Statistica, the One Piece manga currently holds the record for the best-selling manga series of all time at 380 million copies worldwide and is the most-watched anime series in 25 states across America. While the Cowboy Bebop anime certainly holds as a cult-favorite series, it never had the widespread appeal and sheer volume of viewers that One Piece holds. All in all, it remains to be seen whether the series will pan out better than Netflix’s last attempt at live-action anime.
Netflix ordered 10 episodes of the show in January of 2021, and production on the show began last month.
