‘Wynonna Earp’ Will Return After Overcoming Financing Issues

Wynonna Earp, the tv series with a loyal cult following, will return at the very least for a season four if not for the initially promised season five. The Syfy show based upon the graphic novel character faced some financial difficulties following the last season, but has since received support from international investors interested in distribution rights. According to The Wrap, the series is set to start filming later this summer with a tentative season four premiere date set for 2020.

Before running into funding issues, Syfy had previously ordered a season four and a season five. Unfortunately, primary funder and owner of the Wynonna Earp copyright, IDW Entertainment, stepped in and said they were losing money on the show. While the U.S. channel Syfy and the Canadian channel Space were happy to pick up some of the costs, it still wasn’t enough. This is where Cineflix comes into play; Cineflix Studios agreed to co-produce the series with the stipulation that they will handle the international sales of all four seasons of the series.

Since then, IDW has said, “Wynonna Earp, the series, the comics, the characters, the story, and the fans, are all deeply important to IDW. So, we are thrilled to be able to continue to tell the Wynonna story. We are grateful to have partners who were able to help us bring it back for a fourth season so that we can continue to serve the dedicated Earpers, and entertain fans everywhere.”

Elsewere the Syfy network put out a statement saying, “Syfy has never wavered in its support of Wynonna Earp, a unique and important series with some of the most passionate fans anywhere.” Syfy went on to thank the fans for their patience and ongoing support while production was up in the air.

Closest to the show, producer Emily Andras says, “We are absolutely thrilled that we get to make more Wynonna Earp, and are grateful to our networks and [their] partners for working hard to ensure we can. This is an enormous testament to our passionate and fierce fans, the Earpers, who remind us every day how to fight like hell for the things you love with wit, ferocity, and kindness.”

For those looking to catch up on the sci-fi Western goodness before the show’s return, the series’ first two seasons can be found on Netflix.
