Writer-Producer Of ‘NYPD Blue’ And ‘Deadwood’, Ted Mann, Dies At The Age Of 72

Deadline reports that Ted Mann has passed away at the age of 72. Mann was an Emmy-winning writer and producer for shows like NYPD BlueHomeland, and Deadwood. Variety reported that Mann’s daughter, Elizabeth, announced he died on September 4 of lung cancer.

According to Deadline, Mann got his start on the series Delta House, one of three series based on the film Animal House, which aired on ABC. Mann began writing for animation series such as Drawing Power and Schoolhouse Rock. He then landed work as a writer regularly in the 80s and 90s, when he wrote more than a dozen episodes of the legal drama Civil Wars, which aired on ABC from 1991 to 1993.

Deadline reports Mann’s career shifted as he joined the writing team for ABC’s new police drama, NYPD Blue. Starring Dennis Franz (Bleacher Bums, Dixie Chicks: Goodbye Earl), the cop drama appeared in Primetime’s top 20 during the first season’s run. It would also garner several Emmy nominations and wins. As a writer and producer, Mann won an Outstanding Drama Series Emmy for NYPD Blue in 1995. He was also nominated in this same category three other times: NYPD Blue in 1994, Deadwood in 2005, and Homeland in 2016. Later, Mann partnered with Chris Carter for Millennium, the follow-up series to his Fox hit sci-fi, The X-Files. He worked as a writer and producer on the series for three seasons.

Deadline reports after the turn of the century in 2000, he scored gigs on Judging Amy and Andromeda, before landing the critically acclaimed Western, HBO’s Deadwood. Mann wrote several episodes of Deadwood from 2004 to 2006 and served as the producer for the final two seasons. The Writers Guild of America awarded him nominations for Deadwood in 2006 and 2007. Mann continued to write for other shows and films, ranging from dramas like John from Cincinnati to the History Channel’s epic Hatfields & McCoys. By the 2010s, he found further success on Showtime’s Homeland, joining the series in its fifth season.

According to Deadline, Mann is survived by his children, Elizabeth, Lucy, and James; two siblings; and three grandchildren.
