The Montreal-born filmmaker behind Dallas Buyers Club, Wild, and Big Little Lies, Jean-Marc Vallée died over the weekend at the age of 58 of a heart attack, according to Deadline. Tributes from those who worked with him began pouring in shortly after the announcement of his death.
Vallée has won awards such as a Genie Award for Best Motion Picture in 2006 for C.R.A.Z.Y., and two Emmy awards in 2017 and 2018 for Big Little Lies. He was also well-known for his work on The Young Victoria, a film about the early life of Queen Victoria, and Café de Flore, a love story set in present-day Montreal and 1960s Paris.Reese Witherspoon (Legally Blonde), Laura Dern (Little Women), and Shailene Woodley (Endings, Beginnings), who all worked with Vallée on HBO’s Big Little Lies, paid tribute to the director on social media.

Woodley shared a picture of Vallée on her Instagram story, writing “I am in shock. Complete and utter shock . . . But I guess somehow I know you will turn it into a grand adventure…one for the books.”
Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also took to Twitter to mourn Vallée’s passing.
Jean-Marc Vallée’s passion for filmmaking and storytelling was unmatched – so too was his talent. Through his work and with his art, he left a mark in Quebec, across Canada, and around the world. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and fans as they mourn his sudden passing.

Vallée is survived by his two kids.
