Netflix has officially greenlit the pre-production of a live-action reimagining of the animated children series, Winx Club which will be titled: Fate: The Winx Club Saga. Brian Young, who is known for being a writer and story editor on the CW’s The Vampire Diaries, will be the series’ showrunner in partnership with Judy Counihan as executive produce through Archery Pictures.
Production is rumored to start later this September in Ireland, and has supposedly been given a very large budget by the streaming giant. Taking into consideration the network’s more adult audience, previous fans of the series can expect Netflix to take a more grown-up and edgier take on the series which just might be the streamer’s answer to the increasing demand for more fantasy content.
Netflix’s recent inclination towards the uber popular genre can be seen as a blatant move made in order to keep up with other competitors similar fare such as Amazon’s Carnival Row— a series set in a quasi Victorian fantasy world where mythological creatures, such as fairies and Minotaurs, struggle to coexist together.
In a similar fashion, the original Winx Club took place in a magical universe where fairies, witches, and other fantastical creatures lived in co-existience with each other as well, although the show’s main focus was on a “fairy warrior” named Bloom rather than an inter-species love affair.
Spearheaded as an Italian produced television series created by Iginio Straffi, Rainbow SpA, and Rai Fiction through Nickelodeon, the show became well-known for its use of Japanese and Western animation styles over the years. After Bloom’s intial enrollment in Alfea College in order to train and hone her fairy skills, the series’ story lines began showcase the misadventures Bloom experienced with her friends who also made up the core titular Winx club.
The series also followed each member as they learned to deal with various romantic relationships, adulthood, and other magical elements and situations during all eight seasons. As of now no other info has been released on the series.
