Jimmy Fallon had on Will Ferrell and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith for the long-awaited drum-off between the two.
Will Ferrell told Rolling Stone last week that this battle “could become the beginning of a rivalry that will go on until the end of time.” During the bit, the two wore the same black leather jackets, Kiss shirts, sneakers and backwards baseball caps. Before the drum battle, the Ferrell and Smith spoke with Fallon and it was nothing short of hilarious. The two acted as the other.
Ferrell admitted last week, “I have not been practicing. There’s no amount of practice that would help me become a good drummer.” This was in response to taunts from Smith.
The two gradually increased the level of difficulty as the battle progressed until Ferrell ceded his kit to a cowbell. They were then joined by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and began playing Blue Öyster Cult’s “Don’t Fear the Reaper.” The Red Hot Chili Peppers later performed on the show. They had not performed on a late-night show since 2006. Watch below for the drum-off.
