Syfy has greenlighted a 12-episode summer series hosted by actor, blogger and geek culture expert, Wil Wheaton.
The cable network has picked up The Wil Wheaton Project, a weekly 12-episode summer series hosted by the actors. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series are set to start on Tuesday, May 27, a1t 10 p.m. The show will feature Wil Wheaton talking about week’s most popular and trending topics from science fiction film, television and pop culture, video games, viral video and news.
Wheaton, who is a regular guest star in CBS’ The Big Bang Theory. will make a mix of commentary and humor on his show. Syfy president, Dave Howe, said in a statement “Wil Wheaton’s rock star status within the genre fan base, along with his insatiable passion for all things pop culture, make him the ideal arbiter of what’s hot and what’s not in the genre space,” as noted by Deadline.
The actor said in a blog post on his website that I really love that I get to be part of something that brings science fiction back to Syfy, and if I read correctly between the lines during our meetings with the Syfy executives, this is just the beginning of the network formerly known as Sci-Fi returning to its science fiction roots, which is awesome,”. He also added “Developing the show has been incredibly fun, and like I wrote last week, when I met the full staff of writers and producers, I was floored by how talented and funny they are. We’re going to make something that I just know you’re going to love, and I hope that so many people love it, we’ll get to make it for years to come.”
Wil Wheaton (Star Trek: The Next Generation) also wrote “As we worked on the show more and more, we discovered that there were lots of scripted paranormal shows that provided a ton of comedic material. When we expanded to cover the scripted shows, we discovered that nobody was doing a show like this that was just focused on the genre shows that nerds like us love, and we decided that we’d make that show because of reasons,”
The actor repped by Stone Manners and Opus Entertainment also played Axis of Anarchy leader Fawkes in Felicia Day’s web series The Guild and for the moment he is hosting at TNT Falling Skies: Second Watch.
The Wil Wheaton Project is produced by Pilgrim Studios and with Craig Piligian and Mike Nichols (Ghost Hunters) serve as executive producers.
