The upcoming animated Ghostbuster animated series is ramping up and promises to not only be a nostalgic return to the beloved supernatural franchise, but also filled with comedy to balance its action. According to Deadline, the new series, titled Ghostbusters: Night Shift, is rumored to bridge the gap between Ghostbusters II and Ghostbusters: Afterlife. It will follow a new group of paranormal investigators as they take on new cases and encounter terrifying ghosts haunting New York City.
The show’s co-showrunner, Elliott Kalan (The Daily Show, HouseBroken) spoke in an interview with Deadline ,”It was about trying to capture the tone of the original movies and newer movies so it feels like our characters could walk off the television, onto a movie screen and interact with the pre-existing characters if they wanted to.” Kalan further adds to his statement, “The Ghosbusters movies are miracles. They have a very specific tone and they care about the characters, who are so charismatic to be around. We wanted to try to capture that tone in all aspects.”
Reported by Deadline, the studio that will be behind the production of the animated series will be Flying Bark Productions, who best works consists of Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, and Monkie Kid. The stylized art the team will utilize is sure to capture their vision, but their highest priority is honoring the franchise’s history. The series executive producer, Jason Reitman (Juno, Saturday Night) goes on to explain,”We said that if Ghostbusters is going to step back into animation, it had to be as funny as anything you’ve ever seen in Ghostbusters, and as scary as anything you’ve ever seen in Ghostbusters.”
While little information is available at this stage, the mere announcement of the new Ghostbusters animated series is enough to have fans eagerly anticipating its arrival. With Reitman leading the charge and a talented studio behind the project, the series is shaping up to be a must-watch event.
