In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords, Moana) revealed that he and long-time friend and collaborator, Taika Waititi (JoJo Rabbit, Thor: Ragnarok), are developing brand-new television comedy together. “We just started writing,” Clement revealed. “It’s an action-adventure comedy. It’ll be different from what I’ve usually done” (Entertainment Weekly).
Collider reports that the What We Do in the Shadows stars have both withdrawn involvement from the FX spin-off of their mockumentary vampire film as it enters its third season. Clement additionally told Entertainment Weekly that production is pausing on New Zealand-based What We Do in The Shadows spin-off, Wellington Paranormal, with the fourth season possibly being the sitcom’s last. Wellington Paranormal will finally become available to What We Do in the Shadow’s fans in the United States through The CW and HBO this month.
A hiatus from their popular What We Do in the Shadows universe does not entirely clear-up Clement and Waititi’s schedules to work on their new sitcom. Waititi’s schedule consists of wrapping post-production on Thor: Love & Thunder, wearing multiple hats as star, director and executive producer on HBO Max comedy Our Flag Means Death, and producing Reservation Dogs, which he co-created at FX. As for Clement, he is set to star in James Cameron’s (Titanic) next-batch of Avatar installments.
Despite busy schedules, Clement told Entertainment Weekly that he seeks out time to collaborate with Waititi, as the two have fostered unique creative atmosphere together over the years. Though their new series is in the earliest stages of development, Clement shares: “I hope this one is still funny but more of an adventure series” (Entertainment Weekly).
Though Clement cannot share much more on the series at the moment, his work alongside Waititi has fostered a cult-like audience. Even the brief tidbit Clement shared with Entertainment Weekly last week has been enough to get fans excited about the possibility of another comedic collaboration between the two New Zealand phenoms.
