According to TV Series finale, WGN America just announced the casting for the second season of Underground, the historical drama that shows what Harriet Tubman, the leading abolitionist did to help slaves before the American Civil war.
The show is set in Antebellum South, and also follows a group of slaves trying to escape to freedom in the North using the Underground Railroad which surely many of us learned about in school. The cast of the series includes Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Aldis Hodge, Jessica De Gouw, Alano Miller, Christopher Meloni, and Marc Blucas.
Some of the new faces that the second season will feature are Aisha Hinds (Under the Dome, True Blood, Star Trek Into Darkness) as Harriet Tubman, in addition to Jasika Nicole, Michael Trotter, and Jesse Luken. Production for the upcoming season of Underground will begin next week in Savannah, Georgia. Tubman was born a slave and was a devout Christian who after escaping herself, risked her life over and over again in order to free her family and anyone else willing to travel north across dangerous territory towards freedom. This was a journey she believed was her God-given purpose in life.
For those who were unaware, Harriet Tubman will be the first woman ever to be the face of the new $20 bill. Tubman was the Underground Railroad’s most well-known conductor known for her grit and perseverance who helped multiple enslaved people attain freedom. The Underground series comes from Sony Pictures Television and will return with 10 episodes. Additionally, the second season will show the struggle many faced to be free within a divided United States just as the civil war was starting.
On average, Underground delivered 3 million viewers weekly and made history as WGN America’s most-watched original program ever in its freshman season. So it’s definitely been successful so far. The show was also honored with screenings across the country including the White House and ranked as the #1 most discussed cable drama on all social media platforms each week it aired.
The creators and executive producers are Misha Green and Joe Pokaski and other executive producers include singer John Legend, Akiva Goldsman, Tory Tunnell, Joby Harold, Mike Jackson, Ty Stiklorius and Emmy-nominated director Anthony Hemingway. The second season of Underground will debut in early 2017 on WGN America.
