On Wednesday, HBO announced in a press release that the Emmy®winning drama series Westworld will be back for season 4. The renewal was a surprise, since Westworld lost a considerable number of viewers since season 2, but the show still got renewed ahead of its season 3 finale set for May 3. Created by executive producers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, the sci-fi show debuted in 2016, accumulating 1.7 million total viewers and a 85% score on Rotten Tomatoes. According to the official plot, Westworld is a dystopian drama surrounding a futuristic park mixed with the wealthy and robots starring Thandie Newton, Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright, Aaron Paul, Tessa Thomspon and Vincent Cassel.
Three months after escaping Westworld with a few processing cores, Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) hides in a 2058 Los Angeles where she develops a relationship with Caleb (Aaron Paul). As the series is set outside of the futuristic theme park for the first time, Dolores comes to understand the prejudices against her kind in the real world along with the treatment of low-class humans. As a result, we are to expect similar surprises in the upcoming season.
Variety reported that Casey Bloys, president of HBO Programming shared her enthusiasm regarding Westworld‘s return. “From the western theme park to the technocratic metropolis of the near future, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed every twist and turn from the minds of master storytellers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. We can’t wait to see where their inspired vision takes us next.”
Westworld is executive produced by Denise Thé, J.J. Abrams, Athena Wickham, Richard J. Lewis, and Ben Stephenson. Produced by Kilter Films and Bad Robot Productions in association with Warner Bros, the series is based on Michael Crichton’s feature film which was nominated for Hugo, Nebula and Saturn awards.
