Netflix’s hit series Wednesday has already been renewed for a third season, according to mxdwn. However, Comicbook.com reveals that it may take a bit for the third season to come to fruition. Luckily for fans, co-creators Alfred Gough (Smallville, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice) and Miles Millar (Smallville, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice) have discussed the release window for the third season, as well as acclaimed filmmaker Tim Burton‘s (Edward Scissorhands, Corpse Bride) possible involvement in it.
According to an interview with Collider via Comicbook.com, Millar acknowledged the rather long gap between the release of the first and second seasons, citing the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes, as well as noting that the show has a rather large production, which included filming in multiple countries. Millar admitted that this gap was equally as frustrating to the creators as it was to the audience, saying “as storytellers and creators, to have to wait to share what we’re doing with an audience that long.”
Despite the massive effort to create a show such as Wednesday, fans luckily won’t have to wait as long for the third season. Comicbook.com writes that audiences may have to wait only 18 months from production to airing, and the third season is already on track to begin production later this year. With that being said, Gough also commented that an “ideal” timeframe for the premiere on Netflix would be 2027 at the earliest, although Netflix themselves haven’t yet confirmed this release window.
Comicbook.com also notes that the co-creators discussed Tim Burton’s return to working on the series. Burton, who also executive produces Wednesday, directed four episodes of the first season. He also directed the first and fourth episodes of the second season, as well as two additional episodes in the forthcoming second half of the season. Although nothing is confirmed, the co-creators of the series hope for his return to the third season.
“We’re always like, ‘We can do it.’ It’s always great to have Tim here, and the fact that he did four episodes in the first season and four this season was amazing. So, it just depends on his schedule. I think that’s always the thing,” Millar told Collider via Comicbook.com. “I mean, he loves to do it. He has such a rapport with the cast. We’ve had a five-year collaboration with him, which has been one of the highlights of our careers. It’s just great. We hope he’s free to come back.”
According to Comicbook.com, Gough and Millar say that the writers’ room for the third season has already opened, although a premiere date hasn’t been announced.
The second part of the second season of Wednesday debuts on Netflix on September 3.
