Baz Luhrmann (Romeo+Juliet, Moulin Rouge!) is switching gears from the usual film directing gig to directing for television. Luhrmann’s latest project Faraway Downs has released its official trailer for the new TV series. The series stars Nicole Kidman (Moulin Rouge!, Big Little Lies) and Hugh Jackman (The Greatest Showman, Les Miserables) in the leading roles and will debut on Hulu on November 26.
Faraway Downs centers around a wealthy British aristocrat who is named Lady Sarah Ashley. Lady Sarah starts her journey by going out of her way to meet up and confront her husband halfway across the world to sell a massive cattle ranch. The ranch is located in the heart of the Australian Outback in a spot that gives the series its title Faraway Downs. After this husband passes away, she is left with this land, and the duty to protect it against an Australian cattle baron. Lady Sarah teams up with a scrappy and rough cattle drover to protect her land to ensure that she will keep her ranch and the ill-intended baron will not succeed. As this adventure begins, we meet the young Nullah, an Indigenous Australian child stuck in the center of the Australian government’s draconian racial policy, also known as “Stolen Generations”. This tale of love, society, and adventure is explored through the experiences of the differing characters that we meet, simply surrounding this cattle ranch.
Luhrmann is known for very theatrical and high-energy direction in his films. With that in mind, audiences are eager to see what he does with a story such as this one, which might take a slower pace and calmer energy than Luhrmann’s usual films. But, there is no doubt that he will take a very artistic approach to this adventure romance.
Faraway Downs premieres on Hulu on November 26. Watch the official trailer below!
