Warner Bros. Discovery has announced via Variety, that its first quarter loss has narrowed since its previous year, as well as adding more than 5 million subscribers to its streaming services. Reporting its first quarter 2025 earnings, the company revealed a loss of $453M, which is an overall improvement from their previous loss of $966M in the same period sometime last year.
Although falling short of analyst’s expectations, Warner Bros. Discovery showed strong performance throughout their streaming platforms especially Max and Discovery+. With the growth, the total number of subscribers lifted to 122.3M, and surpassed expectations. Streaming revenue has increased 8% to around $2.6B with adjusted earnings before taxes raising to $339M, the company announced via Variety.
In a letter to shareholders, the company announced they had seen a rise in momentum from its successful shows, such as The Pitt and The Last of Us, which boosted ratings for Warner Bros. Discovery as well via Variety. This comes as promising news since the underperformance of Mickey 17. However, even though the company has been on a rise and fall basis since December 2024’s merge with Discovery Inc, their recent release The Minecraft Movie starring Jack Black (Gulliver’s Travels, Saving Silverman) has shown considerable success both in theaters and streaming, helping boost the company’s revenue, stated via Variety.
Currently, Warner Bros. Discovery is restructuring into two divisions. One division will be for streaming and studios, while the other will become a legacy cable business, according to Variety’s article. From the success of The White Lotus season three, the company’s international growth has also doubled as they continue to produce original content. In a separate conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, CEO David Zaslav credited the restructure stating that it helped pave the way to a possible spinoff of the legacy TV assets.
“It also gives us full optionality, having done that work now, not only can we see this and can you see it, but we can move quickly if we decide to change and make a determination on restructuring,” he said via The Hollywood Reporter. Reiterating his optimism, he spoke highly on Warner Bros. Discovery’ merging of the packaging and marketing of streaming products together.
“It’s very encouraging.” Zaslav told The Hollywood Reporter. “You don’t need to re-market to get some of the same subscribers that are coming in and out, and you got two or three players marketing to a product, and that product is more satisfying,” he said.
