Warwick Davis (Willow, Leprechaun), the only original film star currently confirmed to return for the HBO reboot, recently shared insights into the production’s direction. Returning to the role of Professor Flitwick, Davis described the series as a highly accurate retelling of the books, promising a version that adheres closely to the source material, according to Deadline.
“I’m working on it at the moment, but I can’t really tell you anything other than we’re retelling those wonderful stories but with more depth and detail than has been seen before,” he told Times Radio. “They’re very faithful adaptations of the book.”
Davis added, “We’re obviously telling the same story so there are similar moments that we’re experiencing as actors on the set. But it’s weird being back in the same studios again, doing it all again, because Leavesden is where we shot the films.”
After a prolific run in the original franchise where he voiced Griphook and portrayed Professor Flitwick, Warwick Davis is officially back at Hogwarts for the television reboot. Deadline says that this time, however, he will focus solely on Flitwick; Leigh Gill has been cast to take over the role of the goblin Griphook.
The production of the new series comes as J.K. Rowling continues to face intense criticism from fans and industry peers over her stance on transgender rights — a conflict highlighted by director Christopher Columbus and several original film stars, according to Deadline.
Deadline reported that most recently, Rowling publicly celebrated a UK Supreme Court ruling that excludes transgender women from the legal definition of “women.” In response, over 400 figures in the entertainment industry signed an open letter demanding greater protections for trans individuals. Among the signatories was Paapa Essiedu, who was recently cast to play Professor Snape in the upcoming adaptation.
