‘Veronica Mars’ Season Four Premieres a Week Early on Hulu

Cancel your weekend plans, the time to return to Neptune is now, Marshmallows! Although Hulu initially planned to release season four of Veronica Mars on July 26th, San Diego Comic Con gave fans very welcome surprise. After screening the first episode of the new season, Kristen Bell, who plays the titular Veronica Mars character, told the audience at the Veronica Mars panel she wanted Hulu to drop the entire season in honor of her birthday (July 18th).

Season four of Veronica Mars follows the former teenage detective as she returns to life as a private investigator. This season’s mystery is a series of bombings that theatens the tourism industry of Veronica’s hometown of Neptune, California. In addition to the challenging case, Veronica is at a crossroads in her life between her reckless lifestyle and a more steady life with her boyfriend Logan Echolls, played by Jason Dohring (The Originals). Dohring talked to Refinery 29 about his character and Logan’s dynamic with Veronica. “When I describe [Logan’s history] to people, it sounds like a soap opera. It was so dark for a while. I’m glad that Rob [Thomas, the creator] wrote Logan into the military, it was a good way to bring some discipline into his life,” Dohring continues, “Veronica and Logan start almost opposite to where they were on the original show. Logan is now the stabilizing influence. He’s pushing Veronica to become more stable, and move forward into growing their relationship. She’s stubborn and cynical. I think it’s a cool way to go, when you’ve already gone down a road with so much drama, to pull it together and to find a new layer to add to this broken guy.”

The new season brings back Veronica Mars creator, Rob Thomas, and fan favorite characters such as Enrico Colantoni (Galaxy Quest) as Keith Mars, Percy Daggs III as Wallace Fennel, and Ryan Hansen as Dick Casablancas. Familiar faces will be joined by a few new ones too. Patton Oswalt (A.P. Bio, The Goldbergs) and J.K. Simmons (Whiplash, Spider-Man) are in season four as well. Dohring shared his thoughts on his new co-stars, “They’re such professionals. It amazes me that they show up with all these great ideas for the representation of their roles, particularly Patton. You start talking to them and they are also very cool people. The way that [Thomas] incorporated them into the show is very fitting and very right. They belong in Neptune. As a writer, you create this world and you see what fits and what doesn’t, and he’s masterful at deciding how each person is played between comedy, drama, and story, blended all in a universe of its own.”

Oswalt has shared how thrilled he is for the project on social media and his excitement over Stephen King’s endorsement for the show (New York Times Bestselling Author).

Season four of Veronica Mars is available to stream on Hulu now.
