Since President Joe Biden announced his dropping out of the 2024 election and his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris, the internet has been flooded with, well, memes. A majority of them stemming from the hit TV series Veep. According to Deadline, the creator of the show Armando Iannucci had to take to social media to remind everyone that the show is fiction and “made up”.
After the internet went wild over how The Simpsons accurately predicted Donald Trump being elected as president, Iannucci wants to remove himself from the accusations of being able to predict the future since the internet has picked up on some similarities to the current political situation in the 2024 presidential run.
A fan took to Twitter and wrote how the series has started looking eerily similar to the election race. The tweet reads, “Let’s remind ourselves that #Veep has already written a fictional version of this script .. Kamala *inherits* the actual presidency. Then runs. The electoral college is tied. The House vote is tied. Which means the Senate has to choose the tie-breaking candidate. And that ends up with … JD Vance as POTUS (Nb this is DRAMA …)”
With this, Iannucci wrote back, shutting down any psychic accusations, “Don’t forget we made all that up, though.”
The internet has been flooded with memes and posts surrounding the endorsement of Harris for the Democratic nominee. Many have been relating back to Veep and comparing Harris to the character, Vice President Selina Meyer, played by Julia Louis Dreyfus (Seinfeld) in the Emmy-winning political satire series.
The most popular clip that has been circling the internet is a scene of Selina telling her staff that the current president has decided, much like what is happening in real life, to not run for a second term. In the scene it is also announced that Selina will be running in his place. With this scene, one person took to the internet and praised Iannucci for “Continuing to predict our political reality.”
With that, Iannucci quoted the tweet, and simply joked, “Still working on the ending.”
