Deadline reports that Veena Sud (Seven Seconds, The Stranger) is officially serving as showrunner for Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming series, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The series is based on the award-winning Millennium book series by Stieg Larsson (The Girl Who Played with Fire, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest).
Sud has recently created Netflix’s Seven Seconds, which is based on the Russian movie The Major and stars Regina King (The Boondocks, The Harder They Fall) and Clare-Hope Ashitey (Children of Men, Suspects). Sud also developed, wrote, executive produced, and served as showrunner for The Killing, which she is likely best known for. Sud wrote and produced CBS’ Cold Case and directed the film The Lie.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has been in development since May of 2020 and is produced by Left Bank Pictures and Amazon MGM Studios in association with Sony Pictures TV.
The series will follow the iconic lead character from the novels, Lisbeth Salander, in the modern world. Deadline reports that, according to Amazon the series will showcase new characters, a new setting, and a “story that will resonate with fans of the original and thrill a whole new generation.”
Lisbeth Salander is the lead character for the entirety of the Millennium novel series, with her first appearance being in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in 2005. She was also featured in all sequel novels, which include The Girl Who Played with Fire in 2006, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest in 2007, The Girl in the Spider’s Web in 2015, The Girl Who Takes an Eye for an Eye in 2017, and The Girl Who Lived Twice in 2019.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is executive produced by Rob Bullock (The Night Manager, Strike Back) and CEO and founder of Left Bank Pictures Andy Harries (Outlander, Who Is Erin Carter?).
