Briarpatch has been canceled after its first season, via The Hollywood Reporter. The series was portrayed as an anthology, based on the novel of the same name by Ross Thomas (If You Can’t Be Good), with the story being completely covered in the 10 episode series. USA Network’s president Chris McCumber did not ask for a season 2 pitch from exec producers Andy Greenwald (Legion) and Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot).
“[T]his is 10 episodes, the story’s complete,” Dawson told reporters in January at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, via The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s not like you’re going to be left on a cliffhanger.”
The series premiering in 2019 stars Rosario Dawson (Rent) as Allegra Dill, with the story following her return to her small Texan hometown to investigate the death of her younger sister, with new crimes and conspiracies around every corner. The series also stars Jay R. Ferguson (Mad Men) as Jake Spivey, Edi Gathegi (X-Men: First Class) as A.D Singe, and Brian Geraghty (The Hurt Locker) as Gene Colder.
Greenwald released a tweet on Friday, expressing his disappointment for the series termination, even though he “had known for months.” Greenwald expressed that he has extended is deal at Universal Content Productions, and is starting on other projects.
