USA Network Renews ‘Mr. Robot’ for Season 3

Despite season 2 premiering to low viewership, Variety has reported that USA Network has confirmed a third season for their award winning series Mr. Robot.

NBCUniversal Cable entertainment president Chris McCumber stated “We couldn’t be more proud of Mr. Robot, a series that has pushed boundaries, captured the cultural zeitgeist and been honored as one of the best dramas on television”. “Midway through its second season, Mr. Robot continues to break new ground and open up new opportunities for the network. We can’t wait to see where [series creator] Sam Esmail and the entire brilliant Robot team take us next.”

This news comes just as season 2 has passed the halfway point of its 12 episode season, which has seen only modest ratings, garnering only 572,000 for its latest episode and seeing an average drop of 40% in viewership compared to its initial season. These numbers haven’t dissuaded USA from continuing the series, as the show has become a massive hit amongst critics and audiences, gaining major traffic amongst social media and entertainment sites and earning two Golden Globes,  two Critics Choice Television awards, and a Peabody Award. The drama thriller has become one of USA’s biggest successes, most likely because the show deals with current and popular issues such as cyber security, hacking, privacy, and the inner workings of corporate America, but also for its relatable portrayal of someone who suffers from social anxiety disorder and clinical depression that takes a huge toll on their mental health and quality of life. Rami Malek embodies these qualities perfectly and delivers a performance that resonates with many, turning a flawed character into a vigilante who struggles with himself just as much as he struggles against the evils of the world.

Season 2 of Mr. Robot airs on the USA Network Wednesdays at 10/9c, but for those who want to catch up on the series, season 1 is available on Amazon Prime in its entirety. USANetwork.com also has past episodes of season 2 available for streaming.  Mr. Robot recently ventured back to the world of the 90s and featured a special guest appearance from former 80s icon Alf, adding a little lighthearted fun to take a break from the shows usual paranoid, psychotic nature that has infected the minds of audiences everywhere.
