USA Network renewed Queen of the South for season five ahead of the season four finale earlier this week. With Suits coming to an end this season, Queen of the South will become USA Network’s longest currently running scripted series. In addition to the announcement, USA released a teaser trailer to get fans excited for season five.
Queen of the South is based off a best-selling novel by Arturo Pérez-Reverte, titled La Reina del Sur. The series is about Teresa Mendoza, played by Alice Braga (I Am Legend, Predators), a woman who goes on the run to escape a Mexican cartel. Mendoza makes her way to America to find refuge. Dailyn Rodriguez (The Night Shift, Lie to Me) and Ben Lobato (Justified) serve as co-showrunners and executive producers. David T. Friendly (Little Miss Sunshine) is also an executive producer. The series is a co-production between Fox 21 Television Studios and UCP.

Braga made a statement of gratitude following the renewal news on Instagram, “Thank you so much to all of you who support and love the show. It is really an honor to read this headline and be part of this. Much much much love to all of you.”
While Queen of the South has not been recognized by many critics and has not received awards, it has been one of the steadiest ratings performers for USA. Queen of the South is Thursday’s number one cable drama in multiple demographics.
Queen of the South will be a part of USA’s roster that includes The Purge, which returns for a second season on Tuesday, October 15, The Sinner, which was renewed for a third season, and the final season of Mr. Robot, which premieres Sunday, October 6. New shows coming to USA are Briarpatch with Rosario Dawson (Rent, Luke Cage), Philly Reign, Bravo transplant Dirty John, and the Jason Bourne television series, Treadstone.
