In a new update for the popular comic series-turned Netflix series, Elliot Page’s character in Umbrella Academy comes out as trans. Detailed in a story by Vulture, Page (Trailer Park Boys, Juno) first announced the news via an Instagram post on his personal account with the caption “Meet Viktor Hargreeves” alongside an umbrella emoji – the main symbol of the show – above a first-look photo of Viktor from season 3.
Netflix quote-tweeted the post with their own, writing: “Welcome to the family, Viktor — we’re so happy you’re here ❤️” with the Umbrella Academy Twitter account commenting “🎻 WE LOVE YOU VIKTOR 🎻” with violin emojis on both sides of the message (Viktor is a violinist in the series).
The general response on social media is one of immense excitement and positivity, with some popular comments jokingly highlighting the absurdities of complaints about unrealistic character developments.
Netflix has released a short on Youtube teasing the upcoming season 3, which premieres on June 23.
