As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the American institution and long-running live-sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live will launch a British spinoff in 2026. NBC’s late-night gemstone will head to Sky network as Saturday Night Live UK in its usual format of major celebrities, popular musicians, and talented British comedians and writers.
No details about the actors, hosts, and guests have been announced yet. But we can assume that whoever is selected to frequent the Saturday night superpower will end up becoming a household name and temper their talent through trial by fire.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that Cécile Frot-Coutaz, CEO of Sky Studios and Sky’s chief content officer, says in a statement, “For over 50 years Saturday Night Live has held a unique position in TV and in our collective culture, reflecting and creating the global conversation all under the masterful comedic guidance of Lorne Michaels (SNL, Mean Girls).” She continued on to say, “The show has discovered and nurtured countless comedy and musical talents over the years, and we are thrilled to be partnering with Lorne and the SNL team to bring an all-British version of the show to U.K. audiences next year — all live from London on Saturday night!”
The show’s creator and executive producer, Michaels, will continue his role in the new adaptation. His company, Broadway Video, as well as Universal Television Alternative Studio’s U.K., will take on production. Philip Edgar-Jones, executive director of unscripted originals at Sky, has commissioned SNL U.K.
Recently, as reported by mxdwn, SNL back in America had quite the incident when, due to its live nature, saw the audience relay an expletive when prompted by cast members to finish a line. This was during the fan-favorite segment, “Weekend Update.” We could safely deduce that the U.K. audience and Americans watching Saturday Night Live U.K. will be expecting a British version of “Weekend Update.”
