Eric Mabius (Ugly Betty, Welcome to the Dollhouse) has pleaded not guilty after an arrest on two misdemeanor charges in Florida last week, PEOPLE reported. The 53-year-old actor was taken into custody around 2 a.m. on Feb. 20 on two charges — battery and resisting arrest without violence . Mabius entered his not guilty plea through an attorney four days later, according to official court documents.
The arrest report alleges that Mabius was “extremely intoxicated” while at the bar where the alleged incident occurred. Witnesses told police that Mabius was yelling at patrons and behaving erratically. According to this report, he also allegedly knocked two women to the floor — Jennifer Moreno, who was also arrested that night, and another woman identified as Amelia Bell.
PEOPLE states that Bell told officers Mabius “got on top of her, pulling her hair” and “ripped a handful of her hair from her scalp” before other bargoers stepped in to separate them. A witness corroborated Bell’s account, alleging Mabius “slung both girls to the ground.”
When police arrived, Mabius reportedly became “more belligerent” and refused to follow commands. At one point, he “tried to stand up and walk behind” an investigating officer, leading deputies to physically restrain and arrest him for resisting without violence.
PEOPLE states that Mabius has signed a no-contact order with Bell as a condition of his release on bond. The order bars him from any form of communication with Bell and requires him to stay at least 500 feet away from her residence, workplace, and vehicle.
Mabius is best known for playing Daniel Meade on ABC’s Ugly Betty for four seasons. In recent years, he has starred in Hallmark’s Signed, Sealed, Delivered series, with the latest installment, A Tale of Three Letters, premiering last summer.
