Well-renowned actor and director Tyler Perry, who is known for his work in the Madea series, such as Madea’s Big Happy Family and A Madea Christmas, has partnered up with Netflix in creation of his new show She the People, a political comedy according to Deadline. The new series will debut on the streaming platform starting May 22, beginning with eight total episodes in part 1. The second part plans its premiere for August 14th, again following an eight episode collection.
While Perry is the sole writer and director for the series, Niya Palmer, known for The Game and Run the World has joined alongside him in co-creation for the episodes. Via Deadline, the show will star romantic comedy actress Terri J. Vaughan (Where’s the Love, His, Hers, and the Truth) as Lieutenant Governor Antoinette Dunkerson, who, while running a successful campaign, must learn to thrive under the sexist and condescending governor as well as protecting her family as they enter the public eye.
Aside from Vaughan, the series will also star Jade Novah, an American singer-songwriter known for her 2018 album All Blue and Where Have I Been?, Drew Olivia Tillman (Roxanne Roxanne, mixed-ish), Tré Boyd (SCP: Xerox, Borrowed Time), Dyon Brooks ( A Naughty Christmas Story, Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told), and long time actress Jo Marie Payton (The Jamie Foxx Show 1996-2001, Family Matters 1989-1998).
Deadline reports since its first announcement in January, She the People will join Perry’s projects of 2025, following his upcoming movie Madea’s Destination Wedding, which will also air on Netflix later this year. This featured film comes after the release of A Madea Homecoming in 2022, a drama feature entitled Straw, and R&B. As the second series under his partnership with Netflix, Perry’s latest film also on the platform, The Six Triple Eight, became his most viewed film on Netflix since its four week release. Perry’s films on Netflix have boosted viewership for his past movies by 45%, following a report on Netflix’s Tudum website.
She the People can be viewed on Netflix on May 22, along with several other films of Perry’s currently available to view now.
