Despite being renewed for season 3, the sitcom I’m Sorry has officially been canceled at truTV, Variety reported earlier today. As a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic, production was halted during filming of the third season.
I’m Sorry, written and created by Andrea Savage (Veep), premiered in 2017 and ran for 20 episodes across the two seasons. The series followed Andrea Warren (played by Savage) as she struggles balancing her career as a comedy writer with raising a preschooler. Her crude humor and immature take on parenting often put her at odds with her husband Mike Harris (played by Tom Everett Scott, 13 Reasons Why) and her mother Sharon (Kathy Baker, Picket Fences). Rounding out the main cast is Gary Anthony Williams (American Dad!) as Brian, a fellow new parent, and Jason Mantzoukas (Parks and Recreation) as Andrea’s friend and fellow comedy writer Kyle.
Savage executive produced alongside Will Ferrell (Step Brothers), Adam McKay (The Big Short), Jessica Elbaum (Booksmart), Ravi Nandan (Search Party), Andy Samberg (Palm Springs), Jorma Taccone (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse), and Akiva Schaffer (Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping) – the latter three being part of comedy trio “The Lonely Island.”
In a statement released to Variety, a representative of truTV explained that “due to circumstances created by COVID, we unfortunately cannot move forward with production on the third season of I’m Sorry. We admire Andrea Savage’s irreverent voice and fresh take on parenthood and are so proud of the show she and her cast and crew created. She was a great partner for many years and we truly wish everyone well.”
Last week, Netflix Originals I Am Not Okay With This and The Society were also cancelled due to COVID-19’s effects on production. The first two seasons of I’m Sorry is available to stream on Netflix.
