Last week, Donald Trump Supporters dressed up as Homelander in Washington D.C during the Million Maga March. The popular character Homelander of Amazon’s The Boys would best be described as an ego inflated tyrant and a couple members of the cast and crew were quick to comment on the irony of the situation. Showrunner Eric Kripke took to twitter and asked his fan base “Are they actually watching the show?” according to Indiewire.
As a character Homelander has displayed an extreme abuse of power and represents the ideal image of a narcissistic super hero who wants to be accepted by a society he despises. This point alone lends some credence to why dressing up as him in an effort to show your support may come across as a bit ironic.
Antony Starr took to twitter as well with his own two cents on the matter In response to seeing his character displayed as a symbol of support for Trump he stated, “The art of ignorant dumbfuckerry,” as referenced by Indiewire. Earlier in the year, Starr had this to say about the popular character he plays on The Boys, “He’s physically the strongest man in the world and the most dangerous man in the world, but I’ve always viewed him, right off the bat, as the weakest character on the show, emotionally and maybe arguably spiritually.” With all that said the actor then went on to talk about how Homelander’s weakness is his humanity itself. “If you compare him to Superman, his kryptonite is his own humanity, which he’s constantly trying to avoid but also can’t escape,” Starr stated according to Indiewire.
Overall it’s evident that this character is not viewed or seen in a great light, and the viewers can expect more sinister moments from Homelander in season three of The Boys as Kripke’s only words to Starr about what to expect from Homelander next season were “Homicidal Maniac,” as referenced by Indiewire.
