Season two of True Detective has had posters and teasers but now the first trailer is here.
The trailer maintains the same dark, gritty feel that season one had. There’s sprawling highway scenes, chases through the dark, Rachel McAdams training with a knife, fires getting started, and fist fights in the minute long trailer.
It’s also the first time the four main characters; police detective Ray Velcro (Colin Farrell), sheriff Ani Bezzerides (Rachel McAdams), highway patrol officer Paul Woodrugh (Taylor Kitsch), and career criminal Frank Semyon (Vince Vaughn), get dialogue that reveals more of their characters.
The trailer starts with Vaughn’s character Semyon saying, “Sometimes your worst self is your best self.” Farrell’s character Velcro gets the line, “My strong suspicion is…we get the world we deserve.” The latter half of which has been featured in other promotional material. Kitsch’s character Woodrugh hints at his darker nature, “This isn’t me doing this. This isn’t me.”
McAdam’s Bezzerides gives the most context for the plot in her lines as she slashes away with a knife. “This girl’s gone missing. Nobody cares. The interior’s poisoned, and suddenly worth billions, and nobody cares?”
McAdam’s character seems to be the real standout of the trailer and in an interview with Marie Claire she reveals some more information regarding Bezzerides. “I love that she’s not the girlfriend or the wife. She doesn’t really care what everyone thinks; she feels no responsibility for other people’s feelings.”
Season two premieres Sunday June 21 on HBO. Watch the trailer below.
